  • GST₹1,800.0015.3%

How this is calculated

Adding GST to a price that excludes it:

GST = price × rate ÷ 100 and total = price + GST

Taking GST out of a price that includes it:

price before GST = total × 100 ÷ (100 + rate) and GST = total − price before GST

  • Within a state, GST is split equally into central GST (CGST) and state GST (SGST), or union territory GST (UTGST) in a union territory without a legislature. At 18%, that’s 9% + 9%.
  • Between states, it’s all integrated GST (IGST).
  • Rates: after the GST Council’s 56th meeting, from 22 September 2025, GST moved from four main rates (5%, 12%, 18% and 28%) to two, 5% and 18%, with a special rate of 40% for a few goods and services. Some goods have other rates, or none. The rate for your item depends on its HSN or SAC code: check it on the CBIC GST rates page. The government’s announcement lists the changes.
  • Amounts are shown to the paisa. An invoice may round the tax to the rupee.

Questions

How do I find the GST in a price that includes it?

Pick Includes GST. At 18%, the GST inside a price is 18/118 of it: ₹11,800 holds ₹1,800 of GST. Dividing by 1.18 gives the price before GST. Taking 18% off the total (₹2,124) would be wrong.

What are the GST rates now?

Since 22 September 2025, most goods and services are taxed at 5% or 18%, and a few at a special rate of 40%. Some things have other rates or are exempt. Rates change by notification, so check the rate for your item’s HSN or SAC code before you invoice.

When is it CGST and SGST, and when IGST?

When the seller and the place of supply are in the same state, the tax is split into CGST and SGST (or UTGST). When they’re in different states, it’s IGST. The total is the same either way.
