How this is calculated

PPF interest is worked out every month on the lowest balance between the 5th and the end of that month, and added to the account once a year, at the end of the financial year (31 March). So a deposit made by the 5th earns interest for that whole month.

  • Once a year, by 5 April: the deposit earns interest for all 12 months, and the balance grows as B = (B + D) × (1 + r) each year, where D is the deposit and r the yearly rate ÷ 100.
  • Every month, by the 5th: each deposit earns interest from its month to March, at r ÷ 12 a month, and the year’s interest is added in March.
  • The same rate every year is assumed. In reality it can change every quarter, so your actual balance will differ if it does.
  • Limits: at least ₹500 and at most ₹1,50,000 a financial year, across all your deposits. The account matures after 15 full financial years, and can be extended in blocks of 5 years.

The rate is from the Ministry of Finance’s office memorandum of 30 September 2026, which kept small savings rates for October to December 2026 the same as for July to September, and the National Savings Institute’s table of PPF rates, which shows 7.1% since 1 April 2020. See the National Savings Institute’s PPF rates.

Questions

Why deposit by 5 April?

Interest for each month is on the lowest balance between the 5th and the month’s end. A deposit made on or before 5 April earns interest for all 12 months of the financial year. One made on 6 April misses April’s interest.

Is PPF interest taxed?

PPF interest has been tax-free, and deposits have counted towards a deduction under the old tax regime. Tax rules change, so check the rules for the year you’re in.

Can I take money out before 15 years?

Partial withdrawals and loans are allowed after some years, within limits set by the scheme’s rules, and the account can be closed early only for a few reasons, such as illness or higher education. Ask your bank or post office for the current rules.

What happens after 15 years?

You can take the whole balance, keep the account going without deposits (it still earns interest), or extend it for 5 years at a time with deposits. Pick 20, 25 or 30 years above to see an extended account.
