How this is calculated

Prices rise by the inflation rate every year, compounded:

Future cost = cost today × (1 + inflation)^years

and the value of money falls the other way:

Worth in today's money = amount ÷ (1 + inflation)^years

  • The same rate every year is assumed. Real inflation moves around, and some costs, like school fees and health care, often rise faster than the average.
  • The inflation rate is yours to choose. Try a few, to see how much it matters over long periods.

Questions

What inflation rate should I use?

For general living costs, many people plan with the long-run average of consumer price inflation, and add a margin. For education or medical costs, which have often risen faster, use a higher rate. The point is to plan, so a cautious rate is safer than a hopeful one.

Why does this matter for savings?

Money that earns less than inflation loses buying power, even as its rupee value grows. A savings account at 3% a year, with inflation at 6%, buys less every year. Compare your returns with inflation, not with zero.

How do I plan for a goal with this?

Work out what the goal will cost when you need it, then use the SIP calculator to see what to invest each month to get there.
