How this is calculated

The amount grows by the yearly return, compounded once a year:

Value = P × (1 + r)^t

where P is the amount invested, r is the yearly return ÷ 100 and t is the number of years.

  • A steady return is assumed. Market investments rise and fall, so the value on any given day can be well above or below this.
  • Not included: exit loads, stamp duty and tax on gains. A fund’s reported returns are already after its expense ratio.
  • To find the yearly return of an investment you already have, from what you put in and what it’s worth now, use the CAGR calculator.

Questions

How long does it take money to double?

At 12% a year, about 6 years. A quick rule: divide 72 by the yearly return. At 8%, it takes about 9 years; at 6%, about 12.

Why does the gain grow faster in later years?

Each year’s return is earned on the whole value, earlier gains included. That’s compounding: the growth itself grows. The chart shows it as the returns part getting taller each year.

Should I invest a lumpsum all at once or through a SIP?

Investing at once gives the money more time in the market. Spreading it over a few months with a SIP or a systematic transfer plan lowers the risk of buying just before a fall. Compare the two with the SIP calculator.
